The Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position. The successful applicant will be involved in research employing biochemical and/or biophysical approaches to study important topics in modern biology, such as protein/nucleic acid function and dynamics, metabolism, microbial biology, or cancer biology. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biochemistry; sustain an active, independent research group; participate in committee and service work at the departmental and university levels; be an effective communicator; and exemplify academic and professional leadership. The appointment will begin in 2025. The Columbia University Department of Biological Sciences is one of the leading biology departments in the world and offers many opportunities for faculty members to collaborate with colleagues around Columbia and at nearby institutions, including the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics, the New York Structural Biology Center, the New York Genome Center, and the Columbia Data Science Institute. Additionally, New York City is home to other world-class biomedical institutions, such as NYU, Weill Cornell Medical Center, Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Albert Einstein School of Medicine, CUNY ASRC, and others. Applicants must have a PhD at the time of appointment. Applicant Materials should include ( all documents should have 0.5 inch margins, single spaced, 11 point Arial font ) : Short Anonymized Research Statement : up to 1 page, including a summary of previous research achievements and future research plans. Figures should have captions no smaller than 8 pt font. The applicant’s previous and future research should be described. The applicant’s name, institution names, and research group names should be removed from this document. Citations can be used but not to the applicant’s publications, and are counted towards the one-page maximum. In addition, include after the one-page summary abstracts for up to three of your most impactful publications, including only YEAR and text of the abstract. This anonymized statement will be reviewed independently of the non-anonymized material requested below in a first round of review to reduce unconscious bias. Non-Anonymized Curriculum Vitae . No page limit. All names and relevant information can be included, and publications should be listed. This will be reviewed in a second round. Non-Anonymized Research Statement. up to 5 pages, including a summary of previous research achievements and future research plans, with references. Figure captions should be no smaller than 8 point font. The applicant’s previous and future research should be described. Non- Anonymized Teaching Statement . Describe your previous teaching experience, if any, and your pedagogical approach to teaching, as well as what courses you would be qualified to teach. Names and contact information for three individuals who will provide non-anonymized letters of reference . The most helpful letters will address the applicant’s accomplishments in teaching, mentorship, research, independence and creativity, proposal and grant writing, and communication. Letters will be solicited for a subset of candidates and will be due in January 2025 Non-Anonymized Cover Letter . A cover letter (maximum 1 page) summarizing your qualifications and plans. Preference for Application Format. Please respond to the following question: ?In the future, how would you prefer to submit your application - with an anonymized research statement for a first-round of review as we are doing here, or non-anonymized materials only for a traditional review?? Your response to this statement will help us determine how to run future faculty searches. All applications must be made through Columbia University’s Academic Search and Recruiting (ASR) system. Materials above should be submitted as two files-the anonymized research statement (item 1) and the non-anonymized materials (items 2-7 combined into one file). Additionally, applicants must upload their non-anonymized cv as a separate document, as required by the system.
