The Role

As a Midwife Consultant Expert Witness, you will use your specialized knowledge of maternity care to support legal teams on a freelance, case-by-case basis. This role includes analyzing medical records, reviewing midwifery practices, and providing expert opinions on cases involving maternal and neonatal health. You may also be called upon to provide testimony in legal proceedings, explaining complex medical concepts to non-medical audiences and offering impartial, evidence-based insights.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct detailed reviews of maternity care records, labor and delivery practices, and neonatal outcomes.
Produce clear, evidence-based reports assessing adherence to midwifery standards, patient safety, and clinical guidelines.
Provide expert witness testimony in court or legal hearings, presenting findings in a professional and accessible manner.
Collaborate with legal teams to interpret midwifery practices, childbirth complications, and postpartum care.
Stay updated on advancements in maternity care to ensure accurate and relevant expert opinions.

Key Areas of Focus

Evaluate cases involving prenatal assessments, risk management, and patient education during pregnancy.
Assess adherence to clinical guidelines for labor management, monitoring, and interventions, including emergency scenarios.
Provide insights into cases involving postpartum recovery, breastfeeding support, and neonatal health assessments.
Analyze incidents involving adverse outcomes, such as birth injuries, stillbirths, or complications from medical interventions.
Offer clear, impartial expert opinions to assist legal teams in understanding midwifery standards and practices.

Qualifications

UK-recognized midwifery qualification (e.g., NMC registration as a Registered Midwife).
Comprehensive understanding of maternity care standards, risk management, and clinical guidelines.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex cases and articulate findings clearly to legal teams and courts.

Ideal Profile

Fully qualified Midwife with significant experience in antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
Previous experience as an expert witness or in medical-legal consulting is highly desirable.
Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and unbiased reports for legal purposes.
Proven ability to provide impartial, evidence-based opinions suitable for legal proceedings.
