Phlebotomist Job Overview:

  • Obtain venous and capillary blood samples by aseptic skin puncture and venipuncture technique from ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients in the outpatient lab, Emergency Department, Emergency Department Fast-Track, and at the patient's bedside during scheduled rounds and on an emergency basis to other departments and clinics within the VA Campus
  • Responsible for proper receipt and accessioning of specimens delivered to the laboratory.
  • Processes clinical laboratory specimens and is responsible for timely and proper distribution of specimens to the appropriate sections for testing.
  • Assists in the specimen processing area of the laboratory.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including pre-analytical procedures of moderate and high- complexity laboratory tests and waived laboratory tests such as H. Pylori breath tests, Point of Care testing, etc.
  • Be able to meet the physical demands such as, but not limited to, walking, standing, bending and lifting i.e. assisting patients out of wheel chairs, move patients on and off examining tables, stretchers, etc.

Phlebotomist Job Qualifications:

  • 1 year experience
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association or American Red Cross
