The University of Manchester Library is one of only five National Research Libraries and the third largest academic library in the UK. Our vast and rich collections (both print and digital) help us to deliver a world class library and information service for the University of Manchester. We sit at the heart of the University experience for both learning and research and are fully committed to widening access to our expertise, collections and services to individual researchers, local schools, and others in the community.

A key role of the Library is supporting students and staff at the University of Manchester and in the wider community to access, analyse and explore its collections, resources and expertise. The Teaching, Learning and Students team leads the way on Library teaching activity and student support and is the home of the My Learning Essentials, Specialist Library Support and Widening Access programmes. The TLS team is part of the Directorate for Education, Experience and Strategic Insights and works closely with colleagues in Customer Services and Engagement, in addition to teaching staff throughout the Library and University.

We are looking to appoint a Learning Developer to work within the TLS team.  This post focuses on teaching and student support, with an emphasis on academic and information literacy skills. Any successful applicant for the post will be expected to evidence and demonstrate their ability to teach, develop teaching materials and work as part of a collective and collaborative culture, using our inclusive and accessible guidance and teaching and learning principles.  A summary version of our inclusive guidance can be found here:

The TLS team is also the home of the award-winning Library Student Team and applicants to the post will be asked to discuss their experience with working with students as co-creators of teaching materials and in the student’s own learning.

This role is predominantly campus based, however as the UoM supports hybrid working there is some flexibility for remote working.

Overview of recruitment process:

We welcome applicants from any background and role, within the higher education sector or in other areas focusing on education and student support.

  • As a first element of the shortlisting process, we will assess candidate’s applications against the person specification in the job description. To make the most effective use of your application, please clearly state what experience you have for each element of the person specification, doing your best to evidence all the essential knowledge, skills and experience.
  • After the initial shortlisting process, candidates will be invited to short in-person or online interviews so that the interview panel and candidate can ask further questions and add more detail to the application.
  • Those asked to move on after this stage will have demonstrated how their own experience will support them in the role and will be invited to a more extensive on campus process that will involve a teaching demonstration to an audience of selected students and staff, an opportunity to work with members of TLS (including the Student Team) to design teaching activities and materials and a chance to meet other members of Library and University staff.
