Hours and days off are subject to change in order to meet department responsibilities. Number of hours may vary and include days, evenings, weekends and holidays and shall not exceed 999 hours annually.

Job Summary Lifeguards provide a safe and clean aquatic environment. Their primary duty is to monitor pool activities and ensure member safety. It is paramount that the Lifeguards possess an extensive general knowledge of preventative lifeguarding and the rules and regulations of the aquatic environment. Lifeguards are expected to have adequate knowledge of the overall operations and facility amenities of the department. It is imperative that our staff treats everyone with the utmost courtesy and respect. We pride ourselves on the provision of excellent customer service. All staff must have a positive attitude and enjoy interacting with the public.

Lifeguards are responsible for reporting to work in a timely manner and being properly stationed and equipped to protect and serve those customers using municipal aquatic facilities. In addition to these responsibilities, they are required to assist in the opening and routine maintenance of identified facilities and amenities, completing various reports and correspondence as directed, issuing and receiving equipment & supplies and assisting in securing the facilities and amenities upon closing.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor activities at the pool and surrounding areas to prevent accidents.
  • Maintain order in the pool and adjoining areas.
  • Caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards, enforces and adheres to facility rules and regulations.
  • Perform rescues, extrications, first-aid, CPR/AED as required.
  • Demonstrate regular and timely attendance at work as scheduled and report to work free from the effects of illegal substances or alcohol. Must not be impaired due to use of prescription medications.
  • Respond quickly, intelligently, decisively and in accordance with established emergency and accident management procedures.
  • Maintain excellent physical condition and attend/participate in all required staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Properly stationed and equipped during their lifeguarding rotations.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Required Qualifications : Applicants must be at least 15 years of age, 16 preferred. Lifeguarding and customer service experience preferred.

Certifications: Applicants must possess the following certifications prior to employment start date:

  • Approved Governing Body Current Lifeguard and Professional Rescuer Certification. (American Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis & Associates, or other nationally recognized certification program).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Applicants must possess excellent human relations skills and sound verbal & written communication skills. Applicants must possess excellent swimming skills and have a basic understanding of all related pool operations and maintenance. Must possess Lifeguard certification.

Other Skills and Abilities: -Ability to work with a wide variety of personalities and cultural differences. -Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public. -Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. -Ability to perceive material and supply needs.

Physical and Environmental Conditions Job Duties are typically performed in an outdoor environment. Position requires the ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time when necessary. Applicants must have full use of all their extremities and be able to transport themselves and move about the buildings and grounds. Position requires the senses of eyesight, hearing and speech. Position requires the ability to climb, balance, lift and carry loads up to 100lbs, and to work outdoors in all types of weather.

While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee may be exposed to seasonal temperatures, the sun for extended periods of time, wet or humid conditions, blood borne pathogens, body fluids of others, and toxic & caustic chemicals. The noise levels in the work environment can be moderately loud on occasion.

In order to be hired, applicants will need to pass a background check, a drug screen, physical exam, and a reference check.
