Position Summary
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in litigation proceedings and navigating complex US Virgin Islands laws and regulations. Major practice areas include civil litigation, business transactions, estate planning, probate, and real estate.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal counsel and representation to clients in matters pertaining to civil litigation, business transactions, probate, or real estate
- Determine case strategy and work collaboratively with the Managing Attorney to set goals for the designated practice areas
- Collaborate with colleagues and external partners, such as experts, consultants, and co-counsel, to leverage diverse expertise and resources in resolving complex legal matters
- Draft and review legal memoranda for distribution to clients and opposing counsel and for filing with court and administrative tribunals
- Research, interpret and apply laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in preparation of briefs, pleadings, motions, hearings, and other legal papers in connection of lawsuits, trials, and other proceedings
- Draft and review legal documents, including contracts, agreements, and other legal correspondence
- Appear before Federal and USVI courts and represent the firm in all civil and other court proceedings
- Interview witnesses to ascertain facts of case; correlate findings and prepare cases and claims responses
- Build and maintain databases and files in paper and electronic software
- Ability to track hours within Clio software
- Manage multiple files and projects and communicate progress effectively
- Work with process servers both locally and nationally
- Uphold ethical standards and professional integrity in all aspects of legal practice, maintaining confidentiality and adhering to applicable codes of conduct and legal requirements.
- Ability to maintain a consistent work schedule without significant oversight
- Performs other legal related work as required
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to the VI Bar and in good standing with relevant licensing authorities
- Proven experience (10 years) practicing law, with a focus on litigation and personal and business law
- Experience working with a legal team consisting of associates, paralegals, and other legal professionals
- Experience working with case management software to enter time and manage client matters
- Personable and self-aware individual who enjoys working with and leading a professional team
